SUMMARY:STOA Workshop - Exploring synergies between Horizon Europe and regional policy
DESCRIPTION:he European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIFs) and Horizon Europe\, when operating individually\, provide significant support for research\, development\, and innovation. Supporting synergies in their use and implementation may deliver additional gains in terms of innovation results\, close the innovation gap in Europe\, and promote economic growth. \nHowever\, to actively promote the combination of both funds is no simple matter given the different aims and nature of the funds. Further\, the combination of various EU funding sources is complex due to differing rules\, eligibility criteria\, and time-frames (for calls\, policy cycles\, etc.) between EU-funded programmes. \nDespite their differences\, there are also major complementarities and synergies that should be utilized. Horizon Europe focuses on tackling major societal challenges\, maximising the competitiveness impact of research and innovation and raising and spreading levels of excellence in the research base. ESIFs have a strong emphasis on governance via the smart specialisation process and the definition of clear objectives on building knowledge and innovation capacity. \nHowever\, the process of synergy is sluggish\, with complex interactions existing between different innovation actors. The successful deployment of a strategic perspective combining different funding instruments and policy frameworks may substantially boost competitiveness\, welfare and growth in the EU regions. \nTo achieve this objective\, it is crucial to align strategies and implementation modalities and complement existing and future roadmaps. DESCRIPTION:STOA is eager to cooperate and exchange with stakeholders and partners within the Parliament\, the global parliamentary community and beyond. To this end\, on 10 July 2020\, the STOA Panel decided to appoint an International Advisory Board (INAB) for the remainder of the 9th parliamentary term. \nAt its meeting of 15 October 2020\, the STOA Panel agreed a list of individuals to invite to join INAB\, including world-renowned personalities from academia\, international organisations\, the private sector\, civil society and think tanks. It will focus in particular upon STOA activities in the area of artificial intelligence (AI)\, including its Centre for AI. \nThe Board has now been established\, and will be convened virtually for the first time on 5 February 2021. This meeting will serve to introduce the Board to the STOA Panel and set out its future activities and priorities.

SUMMARY:11 de Febrero! Día Internacional de la Mujer y la Niña en la Ciencia.
DESCRIPTION:La ciencia al servicio de un futuro inclusivo para las mujeres y las niñas \nEl tema de 2026 del Día Internacional es «Aprovechar las sinergias entre la inteligencia artificial\, las ciencias sociales\, las STEM (ciencia\, tecnología\, ingeniería y matemáticas) y el sistema financiero: construir un futuro inclusivo para las mujeres y las niñas». Ante el aumento de las desigualdades sociales\, la integración de la inteligencia artificial (IA)\, las STEM y la economía se perfilan como un enfoque de cuatro pilares para acelerar un desarrollo inclusivo y sostenible. \nLa inteligencia artificial ofrece potentes herramientas para el análisis de datos\, los diagnósticos de salud\, la modelización del clima\, entre otros. Sin embargo\, sin la adopción de medidas concretas en la gestión de la IA\, existe el riesgo de que sus beneficios no lleguen a las mujeres y las niñas. Los conocimientos de las ciencias sociales han de ser la base para diseñar políticas equitativas\, fomentar la participación de la comunidad y desarrollar estrategias de cambio de comportamiento\, garantizando así que las innovaciones en ciencia\, tecnología\, ingeniería y matemáticas (STEM) y en inteligencia artificial lleguen a los grupos marginados. \nLas disciplinas STEM proporcionan las habilidades técnicas necesarias para desarrollar\, implementar y mantener soluciones de inteligencia artificial\, al tiempo que fomentan la igualdad de género en los equipos de investigación. Por su parte\, los mecanismos financieros\, como la inversión de impacto\, la financiación combinada y los fondos con perspectiva de género\, liberan capital para ampliar las innovaciones lideradas por mujeres y para financiar de forma sostenible la educación\, la investigación y el desarrollo (I+D). \nSi se combinan estos cuatro ámbitos\, se pueden eliminar las barreras existentes\, reducir la brecha de género en las competencias digitales\, impulsar las empresas emergentes dirigidas por mujeres\, promover una gobernanza de la IA que tenga en cuenta las cuestiones de género y movilizar fondos que incluyan la inclusión social como indicador de rendimiento. \nMás información aquí
